CHM Error...

Hi there,

I am sure you have seen this before. I have CHM files in various places
locally and on network drives. In the past I have simply used the
HHReg.exe tool to choose which CHMs to use. Some local Office 12 CHMs
such as: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft
Office\Office12\1033\XLMACRO.CHM" can be opened but others in the same
folder, such as: "VBAWD10.CHM" cannot and give the 'Cannot open the
file: mk:@MSITStore....' error. Even if I move the latter file to a TEMP
folder I get the same error. How can this be when both are listed in the
HHReg.exe table? A CHM created in the same TEMP folder using Help and
Manual works straight off the bat without even adding using HHReg.exe.
Adding the above 1033 folder has no effect. I have also run MJ's
Diagnostic Tool and it tells me all is sweet.

Any tips would be appreciated.
Thx,
KB.

Hi Kim
Do you think that VBAWD10.CHM is a merged help slave chm.
So it may not have a default window setup since it usually gets
displayed as part of the master CHM?

Just a guess. Maybe it will open on another PC?

You can decompile CHMs using keyTools.exe
which is one of the only tools that does a good job of
regenerating a .hhp and .hhc so you can tweak and recompile later.

Thx Rob. I cannot find any Master.chm that opens them. Trying to use
KeyTools.exe to decompile the .chm gives a 'Cannot open file' error.
Same for all other vb*.chm files the 1033 sub-folder??
Cheers,
Kim.

I'm looking in the Office12 folder... Now most of these CHMs are
only 0 or 2 bytes in size. So these are not CHMs (although a few are)
I suspect they are just place holders to some backward compatibility.

So where is the real help? Well O12 moved to MS Help 2.x (the same
help system used by VS 2002/2003/2005/2008.

Help 2 has a .HxS file ext.
You can explore the HxS with programs like FAR HTML and H2Viewer.

Thx Rob.
You were correct - I've since used Far HTML (H2 Viewer) to peruse the
.HxS files successfully. I am also only registered for v4 - so I have
just sent my registration details to your support email as requested on
the Kagi payment site prior to upgrading to v5.
Many thanks,
Kim.
